Practice Makes a Habit!

Like anything, writing is a practice and an art. It takes daily commitment in order to grow.

6-7 months ago I accepted a job to help run a software company as the head of marketing and sales. Doesn’t that sound glamours? Even though it’s dental software, I love it! Because I love business, watching something grow and ultimately at the end of the day helping others run their businesses well.

Before accepting this job, I was running Lu Curates Media. My own media company! I was writing copy for a multitude of clients across a wide range of industries. My clients over the years included a purse company from Tel Aviv, Israel, a major department/discount store with over 100 locations in the South, art galleries (of course) and non-profits.

In writing their newsletters, blogs and social media copy, it was hard to scrape out the words for my own blog but I at least I had a little more flexibility to do it. Or so I thought, or is that just an excuse to justify my not pursuing something I value?

I recently finished this book named, “Girl, Wash Your Face!” by Rachel Hollis. Heard of it? (I’m also doing her #Last90days DM for deets) It has come into my life exactly when I needed it too. I have written 3-4 versions of this blog post and it’s been filled with excuses for why I took a break from writing.

I strongly, and deeply believe that we are the curators of our own lives but we have to stop making excuses or lying to ourselves. If it’s a mental health issue, an unhealthy relationship or a bad eating habit. We can’t just continue to let these things run our lives and stop us from doing the things we love. I love writing, doing business and hope that this blog inspires people to start curating their own lives. Let’s do it together!

What’s your art? What drives you creatively? And what can you do today to take one more step towards that thing?

Today, I’m writing and posting this blog post

  • Capsule wardrobes? It’s a thing, and I’m into it.

  • Do you think the modern era can contribute to an increase of mental illness in children? This article talks about the importance of simplifying our child’s life.  I remember moving to UCLA and meeting a girl in my dorms who grew-up in the city. In our conversation I was describing my hometown and all of it’s magical nuances. This city slicker college student looked at me,”Wait, if there’s no mall where did you hang out as a teenager?” I hung out in the forest climbing trees. I went to the river with friends and hunted waterfalls. Everyday as a kid was filled with discovery and imagination.  I loved the simplicity of my pre-smartphone childhood.

  • I do love my record player… I could be down to be turned into vinyl after my death. It’s probably the closest I’d be to becoming a rock star.

  • According to this piece, gentrification is a myth. What do think? I’m a little skeptical. There's a Fox News: Climate change isn't real, feel to it.

  • Cuba, a country of great mystery and romance. Get a taste of Havana’s elusive architectural history with these photos.

  • Along the dating lines, Forbes released a list of this year’s Most Eligible Billionaire Bachelors. I hope there’s more women on the list come 2017!

  • Mandy from the Curvy Blogger is killing it with her fashion/travel photos. Her and her husband gave-up 80% of their items to move into a camper and travel the country (a win for minimalism!) This awesome babe always inspires me to be myself.

This week I'm sending along some hump-day inspiration because Monday and Tuesday were crazy busy!  Yesterday, I was invited to help host a Social Media Workshop for Small Businesses. It was a reminder of how much I love entrepreneurs. Even as one of the workshop leaders, I'm inspired to up-my-marketing-game and execute some of the many strategies I have outlined for Lu Curates and Lu Curates Media.

What's inspiring you this week?

6 Ways to Become Your Own Best Friend

March 31, 2015 Melissa LuVisi
Be your own best friend

In the spirit of celebrating ourselves and finding peace in solitude, I put together a list of 6 things that always bring me back to myself.

1.     Take a Walk Alone

When I was 18 I hated being alone. I lived in a house with three dudes, in the middle of nowhere and platonically shared a room with one of them. Our house became a default hangout for my high school’s graduating class of 2005 since all our friends were in college or still living at home. During that time, I became acutely aware of how uncomfortable I was being alone. Distraught over the realization of this dependency, I made it my mission to become comfortable in my own company. A standard that still serves me well today. I started by taking many walks alone and writing poetry in the local graveyards. I was an angst-y teenager, what can I say!

It is my belief that if you do something enough times it becomes a habit. Before I knew it,  18 year old Melissa discovered she actually enjoyed being alone.

Monday-spiration

March 16, 2015 Melissa LuVisi

This morning was rough. I know Mondays generally are but today I accidentally sent an email to a potential client riddled with typos.  Have you ever made work related mistakes like this? What were they and how did you handle them?

Needless to say, I am in some desperate need for spirited inspiration.
